Did you know that the height of the popularity of tapestries was during the 14th and 18th Centuries? Used to keep out draughts, sound proof rooms, add decoration and offer food for thought with the scenes depicted, tapestries were also a symbol of wealth with Henry VIII owning more than 2,000 - of course he did!
At nearby Hardwick Hall [just a stones throw from Blackpop HQ] visitors can view the beautiful 'Gideon' elizabethan tapestries purchased by the magnificent Bess of Hardwick in the 16th Century. Made in Oudenaarde, Belgium, they have recently gone on display after a whopping 24 year restoration project - the 13th and final one returning to Hardwick in 2023.
